Why Kibera

Where We Work

The Kibera Community

KCOOP Organization originated in the Kibera slums of Nairobi, Kenya, in 2022 and expanded its outreach to rural areas of Kenya in 2023. Kibera is among the largest slums in Africa, where a majority of its residents face extreme poverty and a lack of basic services such as electricity, running water, and healthcare.

The community contends with high unemployment, widespread food insecurity, and prevalent health challenges, along with significant social issues including violence. In Kibera, over 100,000 children are identified as orphans or vulnerable, living in poverty and often missing out on educational opportunities. These children are at high risk and truly benefit from any and all support.

Challenges and Resilience

Despite the severe hardships, the people of Kibera demonstrate remarkable resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. Small businesses line the narrow pathways, and a strong sense of community ties residents together.

However, the lack of formal infrastructure means that access to clean water and sanitation remains a daily struggle. This environment disproportionately affects children and young women, who are often forced to take on adult responsibilities at a very young age.
